Charles Dennis has been an active in the New York post-modern dance and performance art scene since 1972. He performed extensively with theater director Robert Wilson in the 1970's including the landmark 1976 work, "Einstein on the Beach". In 1979 he co-founded Performance Space 122, one of this country's most active presenters of new dance and performance. In the 1980's and 90's he created numerous, critically acclaimed works of performance that combined dance, visual media and performance art. In 1990 Charles Dennis began documenting the New York City dance & performance scene on video. Shortly thereafter he began to direct and produce the ongoing video series "Alive & Kicking - New Directions in Dance & Performance". "Alive & Kicking" showcases the artists who are expanding the parameters of contemporary performance and is being distributed to educational institutions worldwide. Over 90 programs have been produced to date. In 1999 Charles Dennis received a UCLA National Dance Media Fellowship award and funding for his 2004 documentary film “Homecoming – Celebrating 20 Years of Dance at P.S. 122”. "Homecoming" chronicled the origins of the the legendary performance space and showcased 10 leading choreographers (Ron Brown, Ann Carlson, Yoshiko Chuma, Dancenoise, Mark Dendy, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Jennifer Monson, Charles Moulton, Sally Silvers and Doug Varone) whose careers were launched at P.S. 122. “Homecoming” was featured at the 2004 American Dance Festival. In 2009 Charles Dennis completed “After Rush Hour”, a new short film created in collaboration with Greek choreographer/performer Argyro Kourliti. Adapted from a performance of the same title by Ms. Kourliti, the film follows a young woman as she struggles to find herself in the metropolis of New York City. Speaking directly to the camera Ms Kourliti asks “is the world going mad, or is it me? She dances in the subway, in Times Square, on the Long Island City waterfront and in an eerily lit interior. Multiple and mirror images of Kourliti’s body in motion further the effect of displacement brought on by a collision between inner voices. With original music by Spyro Karagiannis. See link at left. Running time: 6:39 Charles Dennis has directed videos for a host of both for profit and not-for-profit clients including: The New York Public Library at Lincoln Center, Red7Media, Australian fashion designer Lnda Ellis, The Parish of St. Francis Xavier in Park Slope, Brooklyn, The New York Shakespeare Festival, The Rx Club, Inc., Pilobolus and Caran Propeties Inc. Charles Dennis is also a gifted teacher who has taught workshops in dance, performance art and video in a wide variety of venues - including schools, universities and community centers. |
