1. Lecture/Screening New York Dance & Performance 1971-2007 Charles Dennis offers his account of 30 + years of New York Dance and Performance including photos & stories of performing in early, seminal Robert Wilson theater pieces, the rise of East Village Dance and Performance Art and the origins & evolution of Performance Space 122 (P.S. 122) which is one of this country’s active presenters of new dance and performance. Charles Dennis was a co-founder and eventual video documentarian of the P.S. 122 scene and will show excerpts from his film “Homecoming – Celebrating 20 Years of Dance at P.S. 122” which was released in 2004. Also part of this presentation are highlights from the 80+ video programs about contemporary choreographers and performance artists that Dennis has produced for his Alive & Kicking – New Directions in Dance & Performance Art video series which is being distributed to educational institutions worldwide. Workshops For the past 15 years Charles Dennis has been both documenting live dance and performance in New York City on video as well as creating dance/performance works that integrate video into productions. He currently specializes in offering affordable, digital video documentation and editing of live events as well as designing video installation for the stage. He currently offers the following workshops: 1. Documenting Dance on Video – a 3 part workshop 2. Using Video with Live Performance – single workshop Workshop #1 - Documenting Dance on Video - 3 hour workshop Fee: $500 Topics Covered: 1. An introduction to and an overview of digital video cameras and technologies 2. Different approaches - 1, 2, and 3 camera shoots 3. Examples of 1, 2, and 3 camera shoots 4. Shoot live performance or special video shoots 5. Camera placement 6. Getting good audio 7. Editing & titling the video on a computer 8. Creating tapes for bookings and grants Workhops #2 - Hands on Video Documentation - 3 hour workshop Fee: $500 Participants will form several workgroups. Each workgroup will select one short dance from one of its member’s repertories and prepare it for a 2 camera shoot in a black box theater. Participants will then have a choice of shooting the dance under either live performance or special lighting conditions. Workshop #3 - Editing a 2 Camera Shoot - 3 hour workshop Fee: $500 Pre-requisite:workshop #2 Participants will learn how to edit the 2 camera shoot that each workgroup accomplished in workshop #2. Access to computers is required. Entry level digital video editing software will be provided. Workshop #4 - Using Video in Live Performance - 3 hour workshop Fee: $500 An overview of different approaches to using video onstage. Topics Covered: 1. Live or pre-recorded video accompanying a live performance 2. Synchronizing a dance video clip with live dancing 3. Wired and Wireless options 4. Participants will form workgroups and each group will create a short piece that integrates video and live performance. For all workshops the following equipment will be provided: 3 mini-dv digital camcorders with videotapes 2 video tripods 1 PC Laptop for Video Editing Entry level digital video editing software on computers used by workshop 3. Dance/Video Performance by Charles Dennis Charles Dennis performs 2 solo dance/video/performance works that feature innovative approaches to the integration of live performance and media in “Mr. Remote” (2000) and “The Gift” (2003). Charles Dennis received a 2003 Fellowship in Interdisciplinary Performance from the New York Foundation for the Arts for his work in this field. For details see attached press materials.
